Southern Cross Invercargill Hospital is the southernmost private surgical hospital in the Southern Cross network, it is widely known and used by people throughout the Southland and Queenstown-Wakatipu basin areas.
The hospital features advanced theatre systems, including robotic orthopaedic surgery. Our highly skilled and caring team provide excellent care to 4200 patients per year. Our elective surgical services include Breast; Endoscopy and Gastroenterology; General; Gynaecology; Ophthalmology; Oral and Maxillofacial; Orthopaedic; Ear Nose and Throat; and Urology surgery.
Mō te Tūranga | About the Role
We’re seeking experienced and adaptable Registered Nurses to join our Ward team in a casual capacity. This role is ideal for nurses who value flexibility and enjoy stepping in to support patient care during periods of increased demand, leave cover, or service fluctuations.
Working across a range of specialties, you’ll provide safe, high-quality nursing care in an acute ward environment, collaborating closely with medical specialists and multidisciplinary teams. Your responsibilities will include patient assessment, medication administration, and responding to changes in patient condition, whilst always ensuring continuity of care.
To succeed in this role, you’ll be confident working independently, quick to adapt to different clinical settings, and comfortable integrating into established teams. Strong communication skills, sound clinical judgement, and a calm, professional approach are essential. This casual role offers the opportunity to maintain clinical practice, gain exposure to varied patient presentations, and contribute meaningfully to a supportive, high-performing nursing team — while maintaining work-life flexibility.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
- Current New Zealand Registered Nurse practising certificate
- Recent acute ward nursing experience (minimum 1 year preferred)
- Ability to work flexibly and be available on a casual, as-needed basis
- Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to quickly build rapport with patients and colleagues
- Adaptable, reliable, and comfortable working across multiple specialties
- Experience in private healthcare is advantageous
