We value the partnership we have with the 1,200+ practitioners who are credentialled to provide services at our hospitals. Our credentialled practitioners are supported by a highly-committed workforce dedicated to making our patients’ experiences exceptional. We believe patients come first, so their care, experience, and health outcomes are at the heart of all we do.

Southern Cross Healthcare aims to advance the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders. We are proud to be an integral part of the New Zealand healthcare system; working with doctors and other clinical professionals, public health services, Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC), and insurance funders. Our not-for-profit status enables us to keep our primary goals of achieving excellent clinical care and striving to make independent healthcare more accessible at the forefront of our organisation.

In this section you can find out more about becoming credentialled to work at our hospitals, practising at our facilities, and using our innovative electronic patient records.

Charitable Surgery Programme

The Southern Cross Charitable Surgery Programme provides much needed surgical treatment to people who have no other means of accessing timely and affordable healthcare. Under the Programme there is no cost to the patient. The Southern Cross Health Trust funds all hospital charges and medical practitioners provide their services at no charge.

Southern Cross Healthcare credentialled medical practitioners are encouraged to refer eligible patients for the Programme via the General Manager of their local Southern Cross hospital.

Together, we can improve the lives of even more New Zealanders through the provision of quality healthcare.

Southern Cross Nursing Scholarships

The Southern Cross Health Trust has partnered with AUT to offer substantial support to nursing students through the Southern Cross Nursing Scholarship programme for 2025. This collaborative initiative addresses the everyday needs of nursing students and supports them into healthcare. The Trust is funding 17 scholarships for AUT nursing students, which include a contribution to course fees, a $500 weekly stipend during clinical placements, and $500 towards general health and wellbeing. The Nursing Council exam fee is paid for in the final year of study. Additionally, scholarship students will benefit from priority clinical placements and part-time work opportunities at Southern Cross hospitals. All first-year students (around 400) will also receive vouchers for nursing uniforms and shoes.

Funding nursing roles at the City Missions

Southern Cross Health Trust has been a proud supporter of the Calder Centre at Auckland City Mission (Te Tāpui Atawhai) since 2018. In 2025, this support expanded to include the Wellington and Christchurch City Missions.

The Trust is committed to funding a nursing role at each City Mission for a term of three years. The three positions – a nurse practitioner in Auckland and Wellington and a registered nurse in Christchurch – will provide essential health services for residents and clients who may be experiencing homelessness or have extreme financial challenges.

Nurses are at the heart of healthcare delivery in New Zealand, and it is crucial that everyone has access to the healthcare they deserve, regardless of their circumstances.
