Southern Cross Christchurch Hospital is the largest hospital within Southern Cross Healthcare’s national network and easily accessed within central Christchurch. The hospital consists of ten digital operating theatres and features robotic technology with a highly experienced robotic team, advanced digital scanning technologies, and consulting facilities onsite. The hospital provides a first-class preadmission service, admissions services, day surgery and three inpatient wards including a high dependency area. The hospital offers a wide range of elective surgical services including Orthopaedic, Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Oral and Facial Maxillary, Urology, Otolaryngology (ENT), Plastic & Reconstructive, Bariatric, General, and Endoscopic surgery. The hospital employs over 350 highly skilled and trained staff to ensure patients receive high quality care.
Mō te Tūranga | About the Role
Join the Theatre team at Southern Cross Hospital Christchurch and play a crucial behind‑the‑scenes role that has a direct impact on patient safety and surgical success. We have 0.8 – 1 FTE available for the right candidate. As a Sterile Services Technician, you’ll be an essential part of our clinical operations, ensuring surgical instruments and medical devices are expertly reprocessed and ready for use every time.
From decontamination and inspection through to assembly, packaging, sterilisation, and distribution, you’ll manage the full reprocessing lifecycle with precision and care. You’ll operate specialised sterilising equipment, check and confirm sterilisation parameters, maintain accurate documentation, and support repair, recall, and quality processes when required.
In this role, you’ll join a close‑knit, supportive team that values expertise, open communication, and continuous improvement. This is for a full-time, permanent role (0.8 - 1 FTE) at Southern Cross Christchurch Hospital.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
- NZ Certificate in Sterilisation Level 4 (or equivalent) is essential
- Experience working within a Sterile Services or Sterilising Department, with a solid understanding of instrumentation and reprocessing workflows
- Proven ability to safely handle contaminated instruments, including cleaning, disassembly, inspection, testing, packaging, and sterilisation
- Knowledge of infection prevention and control principles, quality assurance processes, and accurate documentation requirements
- Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to perform well in a fast‑paced clinical environment
- Strong communication skills, a positive team‑focused attitude, and confidence to seek guidance when needed
- Familiarity with AS 5369:2023 and relevant sterile services standards, or a strong willingness to build this knowledge
