Southern Cross Invercargill Hospital is the southernmost private surgical hospital in the Southern Cross network, it is widely known and used by people throughout the Southland and Queenstown-Wakatipu basin areas. The hospital features advanced theatre systems, including robotic orthopaedic surgery. Our highly skilled and caring team provide excellent care to 4200 patients per year. Our elective surgical services include Breast; Endoscopy and Gastroenterology; General; Gynaecology; Ophthalmology; Oral and Maxillofacial; Orthopaedic; Ear Nose and Throat; and Urology surgery.
Mō te Tūranga | About the Role
Southern Cross Invercargill Hospital is seeking an experienced Sterile Services Technician to join our Theatre team in a permanent 0.8 FTE role. This is a key behind-the-scenes position that directly supports patient safety and successful surgical outcomes.
We are primarily looking for someone with solid hands-on experience who can step confidently into the role and contribute from day one. While support and training are available, this position is best suited to an established technician who brings strong technical knowledge, sound judgement, and a high standard of practice.
As part of our close-knit and supportive team, you will manage the full reprocessing lifecycle of surgical instruments and medical devices — from decontamination and inspection through to assembly, packaging, sterilisation, and distribution. You’ll work with specialised sterilising equipment, verify and document sterilisation parameters, and contribute to quality assurance, recall, and repair processes as required.
This role is ideal for someone who values precision, consistency, and teamwork, and who understands the critical role Sterile Services plays in delivering exceptional patient care.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
- NZ Certificate in Sterilisation Level 4 (or equivalent) or working towards
- Practical experience working in a Sterile Services or Sterilising Department is preferred
- Knowledge of instrumentation, reprocessing workflows, and end-to-end sterile services processes
- Demonstrated ability to safely manage contaminated instruments, including cleaning, disassembly, inspection, testing, packaging, and sterilisation
- A sound understanding of infection prevention and control, quality assurance standards, and accurate documentation
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication skills and a positive and team-focused approach
- Familiarity with AS 5369:2023 and relevant sterile services standards, or proven experience working to equivalent standards
- Flexible and available to work shifts, Monday – Friday
