Southern Cross Wellington Surgical Centre is a state-of-the-art day-stay surgical centre in Newtown. Southern Cross Wellington Surgical Centre is dedicated to providing the best in contemporary orthopaedic care. Our orthopaedic services include a range of day-stay procedures, including knee, foot, ankle, shoulder, hand and arm surgeries. As a joint venture between the region’s leading orthopaedic specialists and Southern Cross Healthcare, we are committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care. Our purpose-built centre includes two operating theatres, a five-bed Post Anaesthetic Care Unit, and a five-chair day-stay lounge. We are co-located with Specialist Consulting Rooms and Affinity Medical Imaging. Our facility is designed to enhance the patient experience and provide seamless, efficient care.
Mō te Tūranga | About the Role
As our Perioperative Services Manager, you will lead and shape a high-performing service across pre-admissions, admissions, PACU and day-stay—ensuring care is delivered safely, efficiently, and with a strong patient-first focus. This is a pivotal leadership role where you will bring together people, process, and clinical excellence to create a seamless perioperative journey. You’ll build strong partnerships with Medical Specialists, fostering a collaborative environment that encourages innovation, engagement, and exceptional patient outcomes.
As a key member of the leadership team, you will work closely with the General Manager to deliver on the strategic goals of Southern Cross Wellington Surgical Centre, contributing directly to the hospital’s performance, growth, and reputation in a competitive healthcare market. You will lead and inspire your team—supporting their development, driving high performance, and creating a culture where people feel valued, motivated, and empowered to work at the top of their scope. From workforce planning and rostering to coaching and performance development, you’ll ensure your team is set up for success.
This role offers the opportunity to truly make an impact—leading operational excellence while championing quality, safety, and continuous improvement. You will oversee resources, optimise theatre utilisation, and contribute to strategic planning and key initiatives, all while maintaining a strong focus on delivering outstanding patient experiences. With a hands-on leadership style, you’ll stay connected to the frontline—supporting daily operations, problem-solving in real time, and role modelling clinical excellence, professionalism, and our organisational values in everything you do.
This is a full-time permanent position based in our Southern Cross Wellington Surgical Centre.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
- Extensive clinical expertise, with a minimum of 7 years’ experience in a perioperative or surgical environment, including proven success in a clinical leadership role
- A New Zealand Registered Nurse with a current Annual Practising Certificate and strong, relevant clinical credentials
- A Nursing Diploma or Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent), with a commitment to ongoing professional development
- PDRP Level 4 (Expert) or actively working towards this level of practice
- A relevant postgraduate qualification, with a Master’s degree highly regarded
- Demonstrated leadership capability, with the confidence to guide teams, make informed decisions, and drive outcomes
- Strong commercial and operational awareness, with an understanding of how different areas of the hospital work together to deliver exceptional care
- A proactive, take-charge mindset, with the ability to think critically, solve problems, and navigate complex situations
- A natural ability to translate strategy into action, ensuring initiatives are followed through and successfully delivered
- Resilience, accountability, and a commitment to leading from the front to achieve excellence
