Cheryll’s legacy of care and kindness
Jun 2025
For Registered Nurse Cheryll, flexibility, kindness, and a deep sense of belonging have been the cornerstones of her nearly 40-year career with Southern Cross Healthcare.
Cheryll joined us in 1986, starting at Southern Cross Gillies Hospital before moving to Brightside in 2000. For many years, she worked night shifts, a routine that fit perfectly with raising her two boys and enjoying midday outings with her husband. “It gave me more family time than most day jobs ever could,” she says.
When surgery and back issues made it difficult to walk the wards, rather than stepping back, Cheryll stepped into something new. With her manager’s support, she began making post-op discharge calls and providing aftercare over the phone. In just 12 hours a week, she’s helping patients recover well by answering questions, easing concerns, and making a real difference.
Colleagues describe Cheryll as “committed,” “passionate,” “always caring,” and “generous.” One teammate says, “She’s like a butterfly, colourful, happy and social, spreading love wherever she goes.” Others say, “She lights up the room with her warm smile,” and “We all love Cheryll so much.”
She’s known for celebrating her team’s milestones, being endlessly available to help, and inspiring everyone with her resilience. “Despite medical setbacks, nothing stopped her from rising and getting back to work. She’s an example to anyone who feels like giving up, her passion is truly admirable.”
Cheryll says she’s always felt supported at Southern Cross, from the little things like covered parking to the big things like meaningful relationships, flexible roles, and leadership that listens.
“It’s like a good family,” she says. “We encourage one another, and everyone’s experience is genuinely valued.”
At Southern Cross Healthcare, we’re proud to support people like Cheryll to keep doing what they love, in ways that work for them, because when our people feel seen and supported, that care flows directly to our patients.
