Professional Profile
I am a General Surgeon with sub-speciality training in liver, pancreas, biliary and transplant surgery.
A/Prof Bartlett specialises in
I am an experienced general surgeon specialising in liver transplantation (adult and paediatric) and the comprehensive management of liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, stomach and spleen conditions, including cancer. My primary focus lies in treating primary and secondary upper gastrointestinal tract cancers, collaborating closely with a multidisciplinary team consisting of radiologists, oncologists and gastroenterologists in both public and private healthcare sectors.
Surgical Expertise
Throughout my career, I have acquired expertise in various surgical approaches, including open and laparoscopic procedures as well as thermal ablation. Additionally, I am proficient in evaluating and managing patients for liver-directed therapies using selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) or chemotherapy-loaded beads. To further expand my capabilities, I have obtained accreditation in the da Vinci Surgical System, enabling me to perform minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgeries.
Continuous Education & Training
Continuous education and training are essential components of my professional ethos as I am dedicated to refining my practice and skills. I am deeply passionate about delivering exceptional care and employing the latest medical and surgical advancements for my patients. Having trained and worked internationally at prestigious institutions such as King's College in London, Centre Hepato-Biliaire Paul-Brousse in Paris, Leuven Hospital in Belgium, The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA, The National Children's Hospital in Tokyo, Japan and Institut Mutualiste Montsouris in Paris (under the guidance of Professor Soubrane), I bring a diverse range of expertise to my practice. I am frequently invited to speak at national and international conferences and actively participate in relevant courses to ensure that I am at the forefront of delivering up-to-date care, assessments and techniques for patients with diverse medical and surgical needs.
Location
While primarily based in Auckland, I also provide consultations, perform operations, conduct follow-up appointments and offer support to Southland patients in Queenstown on a monthly basis.
Beyond my professional endeavours, I am deeply passionate about my profession and have dedicated a significant portion of my life to it. Annually, I engage in pro bono surgery in Rarotonga providing much-needed support, training and assistance to the local medical team and the Cook Island community.
Beyond My Professional Endeavours
My adventurous and energetic personality extends beyond the operating theatre. I find joy in exploring the hiking trails across Central Otago and biking through the backroads of New Zealand and Europe alongside my family. Competitive sailing, kite-surfing and completing numerous half marathons are also among my favourite activities. Recently I embraced the challenge of revisiting skiing after a long hiatus, with varying degrees of success! I am happily married with two equally energetic daughters and a laid-back Labradoodle who bring immense joy to my life.
