Jillian is New Zealand born and bred. She completed Medical School through the University of Auckland in 2006, gaining a Bachelor of Human Biology (with distinction) and Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. She completed her Orthopaedic training in New Zealand, working in New Zealand's large main trauma centers. Jillian then became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons before undertaking further subspecialist training with Dr Kenneth Cutbush (Shoulder Surgery, Brisbane, Australia), Professor David Little (Paediatric Surgery, Sydney, Australia), and with Dr Livio DiMascio (Upper Limb Surgery, Royal London Hospital, UK).
She has a strong research background, with a position at the University of Auckland, and a number of publications in international peer reviewed journals. She has also performed research at the Imperial College of London (UK), with world class facilities. She was awarded the ANZAC travelling fellowship in 2016 and the Malcolm Menalaus Medal in 2018.
