Professional Profile

Dr Robert Weatherhead has been a Senior Consultant in ophthalmology in Christchurch since returning to NZ in 1997. He has appointments at Christchurch Hospital, St George’s Hospital and Southern Cross Hospital, as well as providing private practice services in Christchurch. His appointment at Christchurch Hospital is in the area of oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery, an area he has specialised in since 1986 after extensive experience at major teaching hospitals overseas. Initially trained in general ophthalmology, the demand for lid, lacrimal drainage system and orbital surgery worldwide and in New Zealand has meant that there was an unmet need for specialists in this area. Currently he is the only specialist working solely in this area. He is involved in the training of registrars in the public system, as well as being a recent examiner in the subspecialty for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.
