Michael first came to New Zealand in 1980 and worked as a house surgeon in Dunedin before eventually going back to the United Kingdom to start his training in obstetrics and gynaecology at Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. Specialist training was undertaken both in the UK and back in New Zealand, starting as a registrar in Christchurch in 1983 and finally settling back in Christchurch in 1988 after completing specialist training, the final leg of which was to obtain a Masters in Obstetrics and Gynaecology through Liverpool University.
