Mr Nigel Henderson

Mr Henderson is a Laparoscopic Colorectal and General Surgeon whose interests are Colorectal Cancer, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Pelvic Floor Disorders, Anorectal Disease, Hernia Surgery (Laparosscopic and Open), Gall Bladder Surgery, Endoscopy and Minor Ops including Removal of Lesions and Cysts.

My parents were primary school teachers, mainly in rural New Zealand, and I spent my teenage years growing up in rural Southland.

I went to Otago Medical School and then onto General Surgery Training, gaining my Fellowship in 2010.

I did two years Fellowship, one in Waikato Hospital, one in The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide, developing an interest in Laparoscopic (and open) Bowel Surgery, as well as General Surgery On Call work.

I am a well trained provincial General surgeon, and am comfortable in all fields we cover, except for elective Bariatric, Breast and Endocrine.

I am the Surgical Lead on our ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Srugery) Programme, and also a member of the Nutrition Service, supervising the administration/management of TPN in our institution.

In public, I supervise the minor procedures list, and perform endoscopy and colonoscopy, as well as operating and clinics. I also am an Executive Member of the New Zealand Association of General Surgeons, I am a member of the NZ Gastro-enterology Society, and an honorary member of their executive.

Privately I have well appointed rooms which are credentialed for many minor procedures, including vasectomies, minor and major skin procedures. My rooms are shared with a private urologist, providing general urology services, and two other General Surgeons.

I operate privately through Southern Cross Hospital - New Plymouth, offering services in advanced colorectal and hernia work, endoscopy, biliary work (including laparoscopic cholecystectomy).

When NOT working (yes, it does happen) I do CMA (Combined Martial Arts) (Jonghup Musul), a Korean based Martials arts encompassing Tae Kwon Do, Hap Ki doo and Ju doo techniques, with my eldest daughter.

I have two daughters and a wife, and we are interested in outdoor living, the beach and the mountain, and enjoy ourselves in snow on the weekend, and warmer waters over the summer. I also spend a bit of time climbing our friendly mountain, only in good weather of course!
