Southern Cross Healthcare Announces plans for major Campus Redevelopment of North Harbour Hospital

Dec 2025

Southern Cross Healthcare is excited to announce plans for the significant redevelopment of its North Harbour Hospital campus which will materially expand surgical capacity on Auckland's North Shore.

In line with its purpose to ‘advance the provision of quality healthcare in Aotearoa New Zealand’, the major expansion will add much-needed surgical capacity to the greater Auckland area and enable Southern Cross Healthcare to increase the range and volume of surgical services already delivered at its North Shore site.

The bold, future-focussed development will take place in stages to build state-of-the-art infrastructure, expanding from 8 to 15 operating theatres, ensuring that the hospital is fit-for-purpose to serve the growing population north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

Southern Cross Healthcare CEO Chris White says these plans represent a significant investment in North Harbour Hospital which will provide greater capacity and a modern, sustainable environment while continuing to provide the high standards of clinical care that Southern Cross is known for.

“We have offered a range of world-class surgical and specialist services on this site since 1991 and expanding our campus will ensure we are future fit and continue to support patients living on the North Shore and wider regions for decades to come.”

Whilst still in the planning stages, once underway, a development project of this scale and complexity is expected to take 18-24 months to complete.
