Celebrating our people on World Sterilisation Day

Apr 2026

In every hospital, there are teams whose work is rarely seen, yet absolutely essential. Teams whose contribution begins long before any surgeon scrubs in, long before an anaesthetist checks a monitor, and long before a patient takes their first step into theatre. They are the quiet engine of our Sterile Services (SSD) and Endoscopy Reprocessing teams — the unseen hands behind every safe procedure.

Where Every Safe Procedure Truly Begins

For most, a surgical journey starts on the day they arrive for their procedure. But in reality, it begins much earlier, with Sterile Services and Endoscopy Reprocessing. Here, skilled technicians manage the full lifecycle of every reusable medical device — cleaning, inspecting, assembling, packaging, sterilising, and releasing instruments with absolute precision.

Their contribution is not simply functional; it is foundational. Every clamp, retractor, tray, scope, and loan set that enters an operating theatre has been meticulously prepared, tested, and verified by these teams. Their work ensures that every instrument is sterile, safe, and ready to support exceptional care.

Endoscopy Reprocessing Technicians perform equally critical work. They manage complex and highly specialised processes, verifying and decontaminating scopes with rigorous attention to detail. Their turnaround times are tight, their accuracy must be absolute, and their role is crucial in protecting patients from harm. The stakes are high — and they rise to the challenge every single day.

Precision, Coordination, and Care in Motion

The work of SSD isn’t just technical — it’s deeply collaborative. These teams coordinate every day with theatres, perioperative services, endoscopy units, procurement teams, logistics partners, and clinical teams across the system. They respond to urgent cases, navigate last minute list changes, manage loan sets, maintain stock, and anticipate needs before others even see them coming.

And yet, despite the constant flow and complexity, their performance remains consistent: instruments delivered on time, in full, and to the highest standard.

It’s a choreography of expertise — mostly invisible, always essential.

The Scale of the Mahi: What It Looks Like in 2025

To understand the enormity of this work, consider just one example from across our network,Southern Cross Christchurch Hospital. In 2025 alone, the team processed over 100,000 individual items, including 6,293 loan sets supporting specialty and complex surgeries. Each month, their workload ranged from 6,363 to more than 11,200 items.

These aren’t just numbers on a spreadsheet. They represent thousands of patients relying on safe care. They represent teamwork, precision, and trust. -

Across different environments and using different processes, our Sterile Services and Endoscopy Reprocessing Technicians share one clear purpose: to protect every patient, every time.

Their work touches every part of our hospital ecosystem. Most people will never meet them. Most will never see the work they do. But their impact is felt in every - procedure, every positive outcome, and every patient who leaves hospital.
