Specialist centres & related health providers

Specialist groups can benefit from access to purpose built-consulting centres and advanced technologies available on the hospital site. These include a purpose-built endoscopy centre, and other integrated consulting facilities and services. Groups of independent credentialled practitioners are based in consulting suites on the campus and develop centres of expertise to benefit patients in the region.

Southern Endoscopy Centre

Southern Endoscopy Centre is a joint venture partnership between Southern Cross Healthcare and a leading group of Christchurch endoscopists. The purpose-built, state-of-the-art centre opened in 2010 and is equipped with the latest technology, offering diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy procedures.

Patients can access a wide range of services, including anaesthetic support, backed by the resources of a fully equipped private facility, on a large surgical hospital campus. An experienced team of independent credentialled practitioners includes gastroenterologists and upper and lower gastrointestinal surgeons, who provide a combination of clinical knowledge and advanced international training.

Their multi-disciplinary approach to the management of a full range of patients' gastrointestinal conditions is supported by an experienced team of nurses.

Specialist Centre at Eleven

Our Christchurch campus hosts three leading specialist groups within a specialist centre at 11 Caledonian Road, opened in early 2015, and offering a range of services delivered from these modern facilities.

Elmwood Orthopaedics offers a comprehensive service covering all aspects of orthopaedic surgery. Rhett Mason, Jeremy Evison, Khalid Mohammed, James Taylor and Gordon Beadel are all highly experienced in their
individual field of expertise, boasting international fellowship experience, and all working in both public and private practice. The purpose-built facility offers patients easy access to surgical assessment and planning, with proximity to other medical services, such as x-ray and imaging facilities.

A group of collaborative plastic and reconstructive, hand and upper limb surgeons is also based at Specialist Centre at Eleven. Terry Creagh and Dylan James specialise in all aspects of general plastic and reconstructive surgery. Fiona Timms is a dedicated wrist and hand (orthopaedic) surgeon, and Ram Chandru specialises in upper limb and wrist surgery. They are joined by Craig Hawkyard of The Hand Therapists, who supports the group in all phases of surgery, from pre-operative through to post-operative rehabilitation.

Anaesthesia Associates is also based at the centre, providing administrative services to over 40 anaesthetists who, between them, provide services for all types of surgery in Christchurch and providing access to a consulting room where patients with certain medical problems can be seen pre-operatively, allowing anaesthetic plans to be formulated prior to their admission to hospital.

Specialists at Nine centre

Services available on site at the Specialists at Nine centre, located on Southern Cross' hospital campus, at 9 Caledonian Road, include a Hip and Knee Clinic - with specialist services provided by orthopaedic surgeons Simon Crampton, John Rietveld and David Whitehead.  The clinic specialises in hip and knee surgery - and the surgeons’ special interests also include areas such as computer navigation, hip preservation, especially hip arthroscopy, hip pain in young adults, and a wide range of hip and knee injuries and arthritis.

General surgeon Ross Roberts is also located at the specialist consulting centre, and services available through his clinic include gastrointestinal surgery and hernia surgery - including laparoscopic repair and repair of complex herniae.

Ophthalmology services available on the site include those provided by surgeon Ainsley Morris. Dr Morris, based at Specialist at Nine, has a general ophthalmology scope with specific interest in medical retina, diabetes and macular degeneration. Her research focus is diabetic eye disease, working in collaboration with University of Canterbury researchers.

Specialists at Twenty One centre

Within the wider Christchurch hospital campus, patients can access a range of specialist groups and services offered within consulting centres on site. For example, in the ‘Specialists at Twenty One’ suites, a number of independent credentialled practitioners consult and operate with the backing of a full surgical hospital.

Christchurch Colorectal is a group of surgeons who specialise in the management of diseases of the colon, rectum and anus. The group is made up of Frank Frizelle, John Frye, Tim Eglinton, Richard Tapper and Chris Wakeman - and represents the largest specialist colorectal surgical practice in South Island. The group approach provides patients with access to a broad range of sub-specialty skills and knowledge, and also means that consultations and surgical treatment can be swiftly organised.

Women’s Health is a comprehensive women’s health service encompassing gynaecology, gynae-endocrinology, dietician and fertility services. Established by gynae-endocrinologist Anna Fenton and gynaecologist Janet Whineray six years ago, Women’s Health provides Canterbury women with a wide range of treatment options.

Specialists at Twenty One, is a consulting facility located at 21 Caledonian Road, next door to the main Southern Cross surgical hospital.
