CWS
One electronic patient record available 24/7 in real time
Southern Cross Healthcare’s focus is committed to better health for more New Zealanders. Ensuring patient safety and the best possible patient experience is core to what we do.
With this in mind, we have worked closely with the people that are key to sharing this experience, our patients, medical specialists, staff and partners. Together we have created a digital platform which manages our Electronic Patient Record (EPR), known as Clinical Workstation (CWS). This enables medical specialists to offer onsite or remote co-ordinated, accurate, and timely care which begins at the practice room. Being digital minimises errors, provides safer care and enhances security and privacy of patient's clinical data while supporting focused and efficient clinical audits.
Our Chief Medical Officer, Erica Whineray Kelly shares the advantages of being digital.
If you are a Southern Cross Healthcare credentialled medical practitioner and want to sign up for Clinical Workstation, start this process by completing this user agreement.

patient vitals at your fingertips
eAdmissions creates a connected digital journey for practitioners, patients, whanau and hospital admissions teams. Invite your patients to join MyHealthcare, to complete admission forms online and review information and instructions relating to their upcoming hospital visit. Submitted forms and admissions data is viewable within CWS, providing you with a centralised access point to view both clinical data and admission information relating to the patient’s upcoming hospital visit.
- NEW: Completed Patient Admission Form, Health Questionnaire, and Agreement to Treatment Form can be viewed from mobile.
- Complete a Request for Treatment to inform the hospital admissions team of an upcoming procedure before theatre lists are finalised.
- Access patient admission data, including the patient health questionnaire and electronic medicine reconciliation, in CWS as soon as it is submitted.
- Improved data security, data accuracy and processing efficiencies.
- 11% uplift in form completions due to text reminders (implemented June 2024).

Once admitted, Southern Cross hospital patients automatically appear in the My Patient list, which is accessible by the clinical team. Easily toggle between patients when completing rounds.
View your patient’s current and upcoming hospital visits; allergies, conditions and alerts (reconciled with Ministry of Health NHI Warnings); and access in-depth information, including:
- Historic, current and future patient treatments (public and Southern Cross hospitals).
- Visibility and editing rights of patient conditions, allergies and alerts.
- Priority information highlighted in red.
"It provides essential access to previous admission records and current clinical data"
Antony Alford (Anaesthetist)
CWS provides immediate access to lab results and any appended nurse actions/comments. Out of range results are highlighted for quick viewing. The lab results available are those requested from a Southern Cross Healthcare facility and any pre-admission labs where the Medical Specialist has cc’ed the hospital. Lab results prior to hospital admission can be incorporated into CWS to ensure a comprehensive patient record is available to clinical staff on admission.
- Add comments to lab results.
- Unread labs appear in bold.
- Coming soon: Radiology and Endoscopy report access.
"It is very useful to be able to look up patient progress and blood results."
Karen Grey (Anaesthetist)

- Patient dispensed medications are reconciled with the patient provided list (and any other sources) by nurses at preadmission and on admission to hospital.
- A future release: medication prescription and administration functionality.
24/7 Access to digital observation charts with the ability to drill into specific observations.

Engin Ahmed (Anaesthetist)
Within the Notes tab, access all patient notes made by the patient’s healthcare team. Add patient notes remotely, or use your mobile and save time dictating patient notes during ward rounds or in theatre. From a tablet or larger screen, use docked windows to make clinical notes whilst viewing other section of CWS.
- Document pre-operative conversations with patients and communicate pre-operative notes with nurses.
- Dictate notes from your mobile including the immediate operation note and initial treatment plan.
- Review nurse post-op notes remotely 24/7.
"I use it to document conversations with patients, ward round notes and conversations with ward nurses. Nurses like having orders confirmed directly online and it’s not ambiguous"
Engin Ahmed (Anaesthetist)
Within Assessments, access to an editable and patient centric view of clinical assessments. View all health professional assessments for the patient in a single view.
- Document patient assessments.
- Current knowledge of patient’s physical and emotional state.

Grant Waters (Anaesthetist)
Clinical Workstation integrates with multiple third-party healthcare organisations for a more comprehensive electronic patient record.

“Having Radiology viewer in CWS is a game changer - gone is the need to remember which radiology provider did the scan as it is all brought together in one place.”
