He has full vocational registration as an orthopaedic surgeon at the NZ Medical Council and is a member of the NZ Orthopaedic Association as well as the South African Orthopaedic Association.
Pieter studied medicine at the University of Pretoria, the town in which he grew up, attaining his MBChB degree in 1984. After qualifying as orthopaedic surgeon at the University of Pretoria, he worked in private practice in Margate, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa from 2002 until 2015. He then practised as a consultant in orthopaedic surgery at the George Hospital in the Western Cape, South Africa until September 2016.
In 2016, Pieter moved with his wife to New Zealand and began his practice as a consultant in orthopaedic surgery at the Whakatane Hospital, which he continues today.
His sub-specialties are still arthroscopic shoulder and knee surgery, hip, knee and shoulder arthroplasty, and general orthopaedic trauma. He does not carry out spinal or paediatric surgery.
Pieter stays in touch with the latest developments in his special fields of interest, attending orthopaedic congresses, academic meetings and instructional courses internationally and locally. In this way, he keeps his knowledge up to date and maintains good contacts with international and New Zealand orthopaedic surgeons with similar sub-specialties.
