Southern Cross Hospitals announces new name
Southern Cross Hospitals' new name reflects how our care for New Zealanders now extends beyond our hospitals to include a more comprehensive range of quality healthcare services.
We’ll continue to provide the quality care in our network of hospitals that we’ve always been known for but through joint venture partnership we now also look after New Zealanders when it comes to community-based physiotherapy, rehabilitation and workplace wellbeing. This enables us to care for more people, more often.
We are New Zealand’s largest independent healthcare network and we’re committed to advancing the health and wellness of New Zealanders through innovation.

da Vinci® systems enable robotically-assisted surgery
Southern Cross’ hospitals in Auckland (North Harbour and Brightside) and in Christchurch offer da Vinci robotic surgery systems as an option for credentialed surgeons and specialist trained nursing staff.
Currently, Southern Cross’ da Vinci® systems are used in general surgery, gynaecology, head and neck surgery, urology and urogynaecology. A team in Auckland carried out the country's first robotic surgery to remove a throat tumour at Southern Cross' North Harbour hospital. The technique, which has been widely used overseas, is now available to oral cancer patients here and offers the opportunity for less invasive treatment and faster recovery.
