Hospital facilities

Hospital facilities

Facilities on the hospital campus include eight hi-tech digital and hybrid operating theatres, a da Vinci® robotic surgery, a range of on-site consulting and practitioner treatment suites, an Intermediate Care Facility (for higher dependency patient care) and modern, comfortable patient rooms.

Northern Clinic

Southern Cross' hospital campus on Auckland’s North Shore includes the Northern Clinic, an expanding consulting centre which provides credentialled practitioners with facilities including consulting and treatment suites and radiology services. It also includes and a pharmacy, for patient convenience, and a café. Northern Clinic provides patients in the community with access to a wide range of health and diagnostic services within a single location.

Intermediate Care Facility

Opened in 2010, the Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) is a specialised post-operative ward for patients with medical conditions or surgical  issues that require an enhanced level of monitoring and care. The ICF is designed to cater for patients who unexpectedly require some extra post-surgical care or for patients with medical issues - such as heart or blood pressure conditions - that have the potential to cause complications during or after surgery.

The new facility contains state-of-the-art dynamic monitoring equipment, the capability for invasive monitoring (such as arterial lines) and medical infusions, and a 24-hour nurse to patient ratio of 1:2. Nurses staffing the ICF have received specialised training to equip them with the knowledge and skills to deliver a more sophisticated level of care.

Advanced technologies

North Harbour hospital has 8 operating theatres, including digital theatres with cameras for real-time monitoring of the operating area, laser guidance, communications and navigation technologies. High-definition screens help to provide the surgical team with an unobstructed view of the operation in progress.

These technologies combine to allow for better communication and management of the whole surgical process and the laser navigation tool gives the surgical team precision alignment in the theatre. These systems also offer the operating room teams excellent standards of vision, which is crucial for particularly complex procedures.

Other on-site facilities that benefit patients include not only the Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) - with advanced patient monitoring systems – but also modern patient rooms, fully air-conditioned and including flat screen televisions showing selected SKY TV channels.

Robotically-assisted surgery

Surgeons performing prostate surgery and head and neck surgery at Southern Cross' hospital on Auckland’s North Shore are appropriately accredited to make use of the da Vinci® robotically assisted surgical system.

Our North Harbour hospital campus has a new da Vinci® robotic system - which was installed in 2016. The da Vinci® Si system not only enables a range of surgical procedures to be performed through very small incisions but also offers improved vision optics and surgeon controls which enable a wider range of operations.

The robotically-assisted surgical techniques, known as minimally invasive surgery, have the potential to reduce pain and recovery times for patients while enhancing the surgeon’s already precise skills. There are over 500 da Vinci® systems in use around the world, including systems installed in Southern Cross hospitals in Auckland and Christchurch.
